The story of how Shelley Duvall got into a big movie, in itself, as if taken from the script of a Hollywood movie. It was 1969 outside. Three assistant directors Robert Altman, who was working on the comedy Brewster MacLeod at the time, came to a party at the house of Shelley’s boyfriend, an aspiring artist.

At first, the assistants, whose names have sunk into oblivion, seemed to be interested in the paintings, and Duval, who actively promoted her boyfriend’s work, even met with them again to show more drawings. In the end, they didn’t buy anything — but they offered 20-year-old Shelley to become an actress. In the end, persistent filmmakers were able to convince Duval that she was not offered anything criminal and that it was just a small supporting role in Brewster MacLeod. “I said: “But I’m not an actress!” And they said: «No, the actress.» And then I said: “Well, if you think so, then okay!”.

In the 1970s, Duvall was Altman’s favorite. In addition to Brewster Macleod, she appeared in six more of his films during this decade.
If it was always easy for her to work with Altman — they understood each other perfectly, then cooperation with Kubrick turned into real torture. As Shelley’s partner in the film, Jack Nicholson, later recalled, the director was especially strict and intolerant with Duvall. He constantly criticized her game.

And some especially difficult scenes forced to reshoot a record number of times. For example, the famous episode in which the heroine fights off her crazy husband with a baseball bat was filmed only from one hundred and twenty-seventh take. The script of the film itself (it was based on the popular novel by Stephen King) included many emotionally difficult scenes, and Kubrick demanded that the actors play horror, confusion, hatred as authentically as possible — at the limit of their capabilities. Duvall says that almost every day of shooting she had to cry for twelve hours in a row, and Nicholson later admitted to reporters that Shelly once showed him tufts of hair that fell out of her amid stress.

The most offensive thing is that immediately after the release of the film, it seemed as if all the victims were in vain. Critics scolded the performance of Shelley Duvall, calling it comical and implausible. She was even nominated for the Golden Raspberry. There were rumors in film circles that after this role the actress went crazy and that is why she stopped acting in films. In fact, since 2002, not a single film with her participation has been released. Everyone thought that Shelly’s career was over, but no — 20 years later, Duval returned as suddenly as he disappeared. In the upcoming horror film Forest Hills, she will play the mother and part-time inner voice of the protagonist who is crazy.
